On Drathens

Though Dragons occupy a class wholly their own, standing far above beasts and magicians, it would be incorrect to assume their existence is entirely separate from the world's living web.

Among the most fascinating and perilous of all known creatures are drathens, beings that bear unmistakable echoes of the draconic form and essence yet do not meet the criteria scholars have cautiously assembled for Dragons themselves.

The drathen is not a single species but rather a broad classification used to describe those organisms whose characteristics consistently suggest a lineage, exposure or mimicry related to Dragons. These are not lesser dragons in the literal sense, but rather adjacent entities. Where a Dragon is a singular possibly immortal will exerting influence across time, a drathen is a creature of immediate presence: knowable, killable, yet still commanding an awe that sets it far apart from common fauna.

Drathens vary dramatically in form, though there are recurring traits that unify the category. Most are large, often reaching the size of siege beasts or greater. They tend to bear hardened scales sometimes intermixed with horn plates, mineral deposits or semi-organic crystalline growths. Limbs are inconsistent; quadrupeds, serpentine forms and even radial symmetry have all been observed amongst them.

Many exhibit partial fur or furlike growths along the spine or chest, an echo of the hypothesized furred traits of true Dragons. These features are often mossy, soot-black or tinged with mineral colouration and in some cases have been found to carry ambient magical properties. One collected sample from a felled specimen near the Sapphire Downs emitted low-grade thaumic heat for nearly seven months after removal.

Behavioural studies suggest an unsettling degree of intelligence among drathens. While none have demonstrated the strategic foresight attributed to true Dragons, many have displayed advanced problem-solving, territorial manipulation and in at least one recorded case, speech. The voice, noted posthumously by researcher via spellcraft, was hollow and misaligned with the lips, suggesting it was not vocalisation in the normal sense but rather the replication of sound through internal organs adapted for magical resonance.

Drathens with feathered wings seem to universally find lastmen to be fascinating things and will whisk them away to satiate their curiosity and to watch them do things. This is not done out of any sort of malice but instead out of curiosity and the heth simply needs to explain to them why being taken against their will is bad for them to be released. These drathen feel bad about the faux pas for a few days, but are soon captivated once more.

The prevailing theory holds that they are spawned by exposure to concentrated residues of draconic activity. Places where Dragons are known or believed to have acted; ruined cities, burned-out forests or collapsed mountain holds are the most common locations for drathen sightings and, importantly, nesting grounds. This lends weight to the idea that they are not quite born but shaped, perhaps drawn from the local wildlife or latent magical matter by the influence of draconic will.

The appearance of a truly powerful drathen typically precedes significant ecological disruption. Crops fail, wildlife flees and weather patterns become erratic. Whether this is the result of ambient magical fields or intentional action is debated. What is clear is that a drathen's presence tends to distort its environment in ways not fully understood. In some cases, the terrain itself seems to shift, as if geography were unsettled by proximity to the creature.

Despite their rarity, drathens are feared across all cultures. Local names vary; skymarrow, earthfire beast, scaled warden etc., but the dread remains constant. Even the most hardened mercenary companies speak of them with caution and most avoid contracts involving drathen territory unless desperate.

It is essential to note that drathens are not Dragons. They do not exhibit the overwhelming psychic pressure associated with verified Dragon sightings. They do not alter fate and they do not distort memory or probability in the way Dragons are said to do. They are, however, the closest approximation that the world offers to the draconic in a tangible, documentable form. It is also worth noting that drathen vary in scope and power to a scientifically ridiculous breadth. There have been reports of more bestial and approachably killable drathen near the size of large boars or small bears, though these are thankfully as uncommon as the rest.

This proximity makes them uniquely valuable to scholars. The anatomy of a drathen may offer indirect insight into the physiology of Dragons themselves, or at least into how their influence manifests in the material world. Alchemists, particularly those studying transformation and environmental magic, have always sought drathen remains as reagents, though this practice remains controversial due to the danger involved in acquisition.

To encounter a Drathen is to witness something that should not exist, yet clearly does. They are reminders that the power of Dragons does not vanish when they move on or fall silent. Instead, it lingers in stone, soil and sky, warping life into new forms capable of bearing the weight of myth, if only for a while.

Whether drathens are born of exposure, intention or mere coincidence is a question that may never be answered. What is certain is this: when you hear the thunder of scaled limbs across a glade, when the trees begin to twist toward a soundless roar, when the animals go still and the wind holds its breath.. you are in the presence of something that was never meant for human understanding.

Be still, watch. Run.
